Field Day 2014!

CARESS (Coquitlam ARC), The Burnaby Amateur Radio Club, and the New Westminster Amateur Radio Club will once again be doing a joint field day exercise. This year however, there will be a change of venue. CARESS is proud to host this years field day from our club parking lot on the Riverview Grounds! We have chosen this location to put the spotlight on our current tenancy issues and to show that we are still active in the community.

What is field day?

  • Field day serves many purposes. It is a public relations exercise, a public service communications (disaster communications) exercise, and a “contest”. The objective of the contest is to work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.
  • We use FD to promote the hobby and help people understand what our hobby (and service) is all about, and what it is not. It is common for people to mistake ham radio for ‘trucker radio’ or ‘CB radio’. While the technical concepts are similar, the practices are significantly different.
  • See the ARRL website here.

Where is field day happening?

  • CARESS is hosting the 2014 ARRL/RAC Field Day at our club house location on the Riverview grounds. There will be signs showing how to get to us from the main entrance at Lougheed and Colony Farms.

Who will be there, and who can attend?

  • You! Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in becoming an amateur radio operator we WANT you there. This is our chance to introduce new hams, or existing inactive hams, to the hobby. You are welcome to participate in anyway you are comfortable, and we encourage everyone to try out the “GOTA” station. GOTA means Get On The Air, and that’s what it is for – putting people behind the mic to make a contact.
